Magpie Geese

Anseranas semipalmata

Notes:

This was the first time I had seen Magpie Geese. Apparently they prefer coastal waters of northern and eastern Australia but these ones were at Lake Nuga Nuga in central Queensland - a long way inland!

Thanks kd. I grew up in northwest NSW and now live in coastal Qld, and I'd NEVER seen magpie geese before either.

Would love to see Magpie Geese back in their wider distribution. It's decades since I have seen any further south in NSW, where the area was said to out-rival Kakadu for the waterbird life on the swamp country. Old farmers told me how they would shoot, in groups and individually, the thousands of ducks, geese other waterfowl and even emus that inhabited the extensive wetlands. I have only been lucky to see Magpie Geese in Kakadu since. Even those numbers seem to be dwindling when I compare with years previous. A lovely photo ShannaB
