I agree with annorion. This is definitely a Golden Orb Web Spider. Probably Nephila clavipes as they do exist here in Costa Rica

This looks very similar to Nephila clavipes which are pretty common in my area of south Louisiana. Perhaps this guy is in the genus? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_silk...
