Gryllus pennsylvanicus
Field Crickets are black/brown and grow to be about an inch long. They have large hind legs as well as two cerci (the spikes coming out of their abdomen). They are extremely common in the late summer and fall, but the adults and nymphs die in the winter. However, the eggs survive the winter, since they are laid deep in the ground, and hatch around May. Field Crickets are most commonly found in fields and around the edges of wooded areas. They also have a decently diverse diet. They eat plants, seeds, small fruits, both living and dead insects, and even each other.
