Chinese Mantis

Tenodera sinensis

Description:

Looks like a praying mantis, but I never saw them this big. It's about 3 inches long.

Habitat:

Found this one in my tomato plant as I was pulling them out for the season. also found another in our planter box in the front yard. I'm not sure what those plants are called.

That is actually a Chinese Mantis, Tenodera sinensis. The green line down the wing edge is distinctive in this species. It is the largest mantis species found in North America. And yes this is a fully grown adult. They get to about 3 inches in length.

It maybe a variety called the brown mantis.
