Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker

Colaptes auratus

Description:

Medium woodpecker with black-barred brown back, speckled breast. Head and face have gray with red on the back and gray on the legs and feet. Yellow under side of black tail and a black bib. This must be a yellow shafted flicker.

In our area we usually see the yellow shafted flickers but I am going to really start looking to see if I ever see any red-shafted ones.

the species is seriously overlapped ~ i've had orange shafted Flickers and the parents are Red and Yellow - pretty much see them every day. Even in the Winter.
