Snow Fly

Chionea valga

These wingless Limoniidae crane flies are most often found walking around on the snow during the winter months. They are small, about 4mm body length and look like a spider running on the snow.

A male with a clasping tail end is in the first picture and the female with a pointed ovipositor is in the second picture.
