Freshwater Fish

Description:

These fish had yellow eyes, and a tannish body with dark spots that congregate along the sides enough to be called a stripe. Also, a light underbelly. Their bodies were about 6 inches long on the largest I saw.

Habitat:

Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua These fish are trapped in the waters of an ancient lagoon that has a high sulfur content. The temperature is warm year round, the lagoon is in a heavily forested crater, and there has so far been little (I use the term loosely) pollution in the water. There are several other species of fish, but not much else in the water.

Notes:

From what I can gather, there are at least four recognized species of mojarra in Laguna de Apoyo, but it is known there are some other fish as well. These fish do not seem to have the body of any mojarra I have seen.
