Mantled Howler

Alouatta palliata

Description:

There were between 6 and 8 monkeys in the trees over the road. Their bodies seemed all black, possibly with some orange-gold color on their backs, but nowhere near as strong in appearance of those on Mombacho to the south. These monkeys were very active, but not noisy.

Habitat:

These howlers live in a lush tropical forest area surrounding Laguna de Apoyo, to the West of Granada. The area is home to several resorts, but most are somewhat eco-friendly and I'm told that there has so far been little destruction of habitat.

Notes:

They certainly seemed interested in the group of people that hopped out of the car to stare, point, and take pictures, but they did not come any closer than mid-way through the treetops.
