unknown horse-fly

Description:

One of the biggest flies I have ever seen. It had a mostly-black body, clear wings, white pads at the end of its legs, and big red eyes.

Habitat:

This fly showed up on a soda can under a beach-side hut on the Pacific. It was a dry, warm day in the middle of rainy season. Lots of trees around us, and a small open field a good ways behind us into the trees.
