Amanita muscaria
The original fairy tale toadstool, the fly agaric is easily recognised by its bright red cap and white spots. A real Super Mario mushroom! The first two pictures show a "young" fungus, in its button form, and the final picture shows a matured mushroom.
Native to temperate and boreal areas of the Northern Hemisphere
Found a bunch of these hiding in dead leaves under a bush on the University of Essex campus. I have never seen these before, they are the quintessential toadstool!

I think they are locally abundant here, as in they're pretty common in some areas, but then in others I never see them. Definitely one of the most recognisable fungi out there!
I'm surprised you'd never seen them before; they must be somewhat uncommon there, then. They are quite common here, and it seems they are pretty much the same the world over. I think it must be the most quintessential fungus there is.
Looks like a pizza with toppings :). But very poisonous.
Thanks Donna! I think they're really awesome mushrooms, they remind me of Super Mario haha!
very cool!
