Description:

Thonningia sanguinea is a root parasite widespread in forests in subSaharan Africa. Its family, Balanophoraceae, includes about 50 species of obligatory root parasites. It has no leaves, drawing its nutrition from the host plants.. Flower about 8cm wide.
