Knobbly Crab spider

Stephanopis altifrons

Description:

A pale (bark coloured) rough-bodied spider about 11 mm long. Crab claw like spikey legs. Eyes not easily identifiable.

Habitat:

dry sclerophyll forest

Notes:

Spotted this small spider on a Casuarina tree this morning. Did not have the heart to disturb her as she was apparently guarding her eggs. Pic #5 shows her in her sheltered hide-out on the trunk of a casuarina.

Subtle but fascinating. What an interesting location choice for a nest. Very well disguised too. Really neat little web - hard to keep in mind this is vertical.
