An odd looking thing, featuring individual worm-like cream-coloured segments. The substrate on the tree was cracked and discoloured, but I'm unsure whether this was the result of the segments or something else. Not sure whether it's of insect or fungal origin...
Open Eucalypt forest. Mid-summer, but during a warm dry period. Positioned about head height - about 2.5 metres up an unidentified eucalypt.
I first thought it might have been some sort of insect activity, but as it was quite high I was unable to get a close look at it - but I did notice that none of the creamy segments were moving. On looking at the photo I'm guessing it might actually be some sort of fungi or lichen. Any clues?

This is Fungi I'm quite sure.
Hey Clive - yeah, lichen was one of my thoughts as well.
no problem, you're welcome. maybe this pdf is something for your resarch ( http://www.google.nl/#hl=nl&cp=13&am... ) first link/ the pdf: introducing in.....! good luck
Hey Alex! You might be on to something there - I can see a lot of similarities between a few of the images you've linked and my specimen. I might do a bit more research on slime molds - thanks!
maybe a slime mold fruitingbody- plasmodiocarp ( http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&sa... ) . take a look on this site ( http://www.hiddenforest.co.nz/slime/inde... ) between the slime molds, these are the nz - species, but some are cosmopolitian and it's just to get an idea! when it is a slime mold (amoebozoa) , then it isn't a fungi anymore, but is also studied by mycology/fungi. I don't know what kind of lichen, you have there, but i doubt it is one ! more likely (would i say) the slime mold, good luck
