Ganoderma australe

Ganoderma australe

Description:

Thick grey and black rubbery plates approximately 30mm across; almost hoof shaped but not continuous round; smooth underneath (no visible gills or pores). Scary looking black face on top which is probably from a previous seasons growth.

Habitat:

South side of 15 meter eucalyptus trunk about 1.7 meters above ground.

Notes:

Top one looked like an old version of lower one - very similar to Bill Leithhead's version http://www.elfram.com/fungi/fungi_h/gana... Tree seemed healthy otherwise although this one is know to cause heart rot and may eventually kill the tree.

CorduneanuVlad... the problem is that Fomes fomentarius is not recorded as being in Australia as far as I can tell.
