Blue Marsh Hawk Female

Orthetrum glaucum

Description:

Saw it this morning, basking in the sun. In some species of dragonfly, the male and female are remarkably similar. Blue Marsh Hawk males are similar to females, although their ‘face-plate’ is significantly darker and the abdomen is lacking the prominent yellow stripes present on the females. Interestingly enough, the colour of the male itself changes drastically over its maturation period.

Habitat:

Near flowering gardens.

Thanks Kadavoor, it was a medium dragonfly. I have not changed the image. The earlier one was taken with my phone and I had also clicked the same one using my cam. The ones with the can were better so I removed the old one and uploaded these new clearer pics.

Or the Crimson Marsh Glider (Trithemis aurora) Female? Are you changed the image? Is it a small dragonfly or an average sized?

The identification of females are always confusing because they are named by the properties of males.

May be the Blue Marsh Hawk (Orthetrum Glaucum) Female:

I think Ruddy Marsh Skimmer (Crocothemis servilia) Female's abdomen has a mid dorsal black stripe:

Thanks for the information Taka.ita. I have not mentioned the scientific name because I am not sure if this is correct. Will mention it as soon as I can confirm the species.

Ruddy Marsh Skimmer = Crocothemis servilia.

I had to look it up. It is really better to mention the scientific name.

And no, it does not look like a Crocothemis species. It lacks the broad abdomen. The abdomen of this species is round. At first sight it is a species in the genus Sympetrum or Orthetrum. Both have lots of species.
