Hi Liam, thanks for our suggestion. Common names vary from country to country and I normally use the name appropriate to where it was seen, in this case the Spanish name is actually Calamón but my laptop does not allow me to type that directly into Noah, it is necessary to type it into another program then copy and paste. European books in the English language show it as Purple Gallinule, which I have used. The ones I saw in New Zealand I have used Pukeko, in Singapore I did use Purple Swamphen, etc. All these names are correct but the American Purple Swamphen is a different species! Only the Latin scientific names are universal. If you really want to be confused try using an Irish Bird book, they have numerous variations for most species!
