Ruffed grouse

Bonasa umbellus

Description:

A medium-sized grouse, variegated brown with black ruff and banded tail visible when "displaying".

Habitat:

Mixed woods, near grassy clearing.

Notes:

This family of grouse (about 6 in total) came by in the undergrowth. One came right into the open and one displayed, turning toward us. My guide book says both the males and females display, so I'm not sure the sex of either of these birds (photos show two different birds).

Stunning image. Good job at being there for this shot too. If you enjoy photographing nature in the Kawarthas why not post your sightings in this mission. Hope this helps.

Very cool! Don't think I've ever seen one before. Not common in Texas
