I suspect this is a bushy-tailed woodrat (Neotoma cinerea). See http://imnh.isu.edu/digitalatlas/bio/mam... for more information. I've seen these rats on only one other occasion and that was in Montana, but this animal resembles the one that I saw. Also known as packrats.
