Tropidacris cristata
this truly one of the largest grasshoppers in the world it measures 15cm (6 inches) and can weigh upwards of 30 grams. the entire speciman couldn't fit into the macro view! These grasshoppers have the most beautiful redish/purplish wings. This one was spotted on a fence post next to a street lamp at night.
this one spotted in the tropical dry forest of NW Costa Rica. Known range is from mexico to northern south america.

Thanks Leuba! I am so glad you enjoyed seeing this wonderful creature!
what great colours - I love the white pattern on his legs.
I wish I hadn't had the macro lens that night Sachin. I could have gotten a shot of the entire animal!
Very nice detailed series,
If you were starving only one would prove to be a good meal. These are enormous! Thanks Mayra!
