Reeftop Pipefish

Corythoichthys haematopterus

Description:

Also known as Dragon Pipefish, Dragonface Pipefish, Messmate Reeftop Pipefish, Yellow-streaked Pipefish. They feed on tiny swimming invertebrates which they suck whole into their mouths, and grow to a length of about 17cm.

Habitat:

Found singly or in pairs in shallow water, on rubble and sand patches also along reef edges. Found at depths of 0 to 21m. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

I spotted quite a few of these pipefish very close to shore -- in only about a meter of water. I couldn't get a good shot of them, however, because of the waves... All of them were in pairs.
