Description:

Bright yellow polypore. Edges of growth a creamy color. Has a convoluted, spongy texture. Appears shaggy or fringed.

Habitat:

On a dead, fallen pine tree next to a flooded area (had been pulled out of a large puddle in the road) in a dense hardwood forest clearing.

@Brian38: I've talked to a couple of fungi experts, and they do not believe that this is S. Ochraceum (but agree it is a polypore of sorts).

I started looking into the Pycnoporellus genus and there are some striking similarities.

@Brian38 Thank you for the possible ID. I am still a newbie with mushroom identifications, but I am learning! :) This one did strike me as a rare one, so I have been extending my feelers for some thoughts on IDs. It was such a beautiful find!

It was definitely a downed evergreen--as my husband and I had to work around it to address some flooding on our new homestead property.

This fungus usually grows on hardwoods. So I'm not sure about it growing on pine. The similarity is remarkable - even the white ring on the edges. Nice find -this one might be a bit more rare. Here is a good research site for mushrooms and odd fungus http://americanmushrooms.com/gallery.htm...
