It has a wingspan ranging from 170 to 198 cm and weight ranging from 3 to 5 kg, measuring about 85 cm long. It has the head and neck naked, painted red, yellow and orange, the upper body pale yellow, white, black wings and tail, the underside white, with black and white plumage.
It has a broad distribution, ranging from Latin America to the south of Mexico. It inhabits forests, but most areas of Cerrado. Although present throughout Brazil, is more common in the North, Northeast and Midwest. Also found from Mexico to Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, northern Argentina and Uruguay. It inhabits areas of woodland with clearings (fields, pastures) distant from urban centers, is never found in desert regions.
It is vulnerable to extinction because Brazil is the only vulture that is affected by habitat destruction, and is caught for trafficking of animals for their beauty, and be captured for display as a trophy.
