Alcedo atthis
Common Kingfisher spotted in Zama Yatoyama Park, Zama, Kanagawa, Japan. It kept flying into a small pond and pulling out tiny fresh water crustaceans(?) to eat (see first photo).

great series!
So true. The kingfisher knew where to look. Nature shows the way! :)
Thanks Neil Ross, I had no idea there where fresh water shrimp out there. The world never ceases to amaze.
Magnificent spotting, SargonR! I had no idea there were any kingfisher species in Japan. This one is a beauty! Regarding the crustacean, difficult to say. One possibility could be Caridina multidentata, a Japanese native, and largely a freshwater species for mating and in latter life - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caridina_m...
Just out of curiosity, can anyone ID the small animal (crustacean?) that the kingfisher is eating? It was in a freshwater pond adjacent to a rice patty.
