Red-tailed hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

I was walking through a wooded part of campus and noticed the squirrels were frantically chirping their "DANGER!" calls. Honestly the hawks are the only excitement the squirrels get around here. After scanning the oak canopy for a few seconds, I found the bird resting calmly on a branch, while all the squirrels were scurrying for cover.

Habitat:

A hill on campus that is dominated by about fifty hundred year old white oak trees.

Notes:

It was very windy and the hawk did not move for the entire five minutes I watched it.
