Butterfly Bush

Buddleja sp

Description:

large flowering woody shrub, small lavender flowers, new growth leaves thick, grey and fuzzy not sure of the exact species.

Habitat:

subtropical mountains

Notes:

This is one of the few butterfly bushes I've seen in the wild. I spotted this in subtropical mountains near the border with China during a 4 day trek.

I think the issue with B.davidii is it grows on limestone cliffs etc in its natural range, so it feels right at home in mortar joints and concrete cracks. You can't help admire its tenacity and I love the way it seems determined to green up cities whether we like it or not!

Thanks Emma and you're right nice to see them in the wild. Thanks Craig, thought you would like this. I didn't know that about Buddleja in the UK. Never really thought it would be a huge problem anywhere but I guess they do spread fairly easily.

Lovely shots Dan! This is a really nice Buddleja too.
Buddleja davidii is wild and free in the UK! It grows in any tiny crack in bridges and uncared for buildings and all over our railway cuttings. Costs the railway companies a fortune to control each year!
