Accipiter (Σαϊνι)

Falco columbarius

Description:

Looks like a hawk but smaller

Habitat:

They are commonly found in wooded or shrubby areas.

Notes:

I spotted it in the city of Athens in the southern suburbs in my backyard hunting the pigeon that is under its claws. I suppose that due to the mountain we have near by and the abandoned old airport which has become like a big shrubby place it is possible for a bird like this to survive. Not a merlin, an accipiter of some sort!

This isn't a Merlin...it's a hawk from the accipiter genus...based on size, I'd say Eurasian sparrowhawk...
