Pipilo maculatus
Male bird with a dark head, tail and upper body. The sides are rufous and eyes are red. There are white spots on the wings and a white belly and heart under its tail. This bird was quite elusive!
In chaparral area of Daley Ranch under bushes.
"Their breeding habitat is chaparral, thickets or shrubby areas across western North America. This bird interbreeds with the Collared Towhee where their ranges overlap in southwestern Mexico." - Wikipedia

I get out a lot more in the cooler months. I don't care for hot weather. I know, why do I live here? :) I've been walking/hiking a few times each week and sometimes bring the dog. This is the first time I've seen this bird. I wish I was able to get better photo's. Maybe next time!
Cindy, you clearly get outdoors way more than I do! I didn't even know we had spotted towhees here! I'm inspired!
