Southern Flying Squirrel

Glaucomys volans

Southern flying squirrels have grey-brown fur on top with darker flanks and are a cream color underneath. They are mostly nocturnal and have large dark eyes and a flattened tail. They use a furry membrane called a patagium, which extends between the front and rear legs, to glide through the air.

Deciduous woodlands.

Very cool! I had no idea there were flying squirrels in N. America. Love it when I learn something new about my own backyard.
