Rainbow lorikeet

Trichoglossus haematodus

Description:

The Rainbow Lorikeet is a species of Australasian parrot found in Australia, eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In Australia, it is common along the eastern seaboard, from Queensland to South Australia and northwest Tasmania. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas.

Habitat:

Nashville zoo.

Notes:

The Rainbow lorikeets are a popular attraction at Nashville Zoo where they will readily come to a hand for food. This little guy caught my attention as he performed his (very thorough) ablutions!

Thanks Antonio! You have a great collection too!
I think you are right & he may be molting - the enclosure is outdoors so I guess they would be getting their winter plumage around November time.

They are really cool birds. Check out some funny lorikeet stories in the comments here - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/903...
At the moment in Noosa, Queensland, they flock along the river in the evenings in their THOUSANDS. It's just unbelievable, there are so many of them and they are so loud you can hardly hear yourself think!
