Brown Garden Snail

Cornu aspersum

Description:

A slug type body that carries a light brown shell. This is SPEEDY, my granddaughter pet. We are not sure how old he is , but she has had him as a pet for at least 3 years. I read they can live up to 25 years. The snails are usually very small in size ranging in size from 30 centimeters to 15 inches in length. They have two sets of tentacles on the top of their head. they have the ability to retract them into their head.

Habitat:

Snails are quite plentiful in the world so it shouldn't come to a surprise to learn they are found in very diverse habitiats From deserts to mountain areas. Speedy was found crawly on the tar driveway, probably heading for the woods. I have them in my garden. they love damp areas. Snails are very slow animals by nature, but thet are very instinctive when it comes to their habitat and survival skills.

Notes:

There are more than 200,000 species. Many are used as a source of food. After snail sitting for Speedy during a weekend I would never eat one again. He has a great personality. I read that they can't hear but they must hear or feel something, because when I'd call his name while holding him Speedy would come out of his shell and stretch up his head toward me. I spent several minutes a day playing with him. I'm convinced Speedy is an individual snail with a cute personality.
