Happy Valentine's Day! This is a subadult Eastern Tiger Salamander that was very brightly colored and had a heart-shaped blotch on his body. Tiger Salamanders spend much of their life in underground burrows.

I was very excited to find my first salamander last week & having been turning over rocks ever since in the hope of finding another!

Seema,
All of our salamanders have some degree of toxicity. For most, including the tiger salamander, it is composed of nasty tasting chemicals that make most predators think twice before trying to eat them. A few, like the newts, can be toxic enough to kill a human if enough are ingested.

Ya, the heart shapes are well visible against the black background. Most probably poisonous???
