Stag Beetle

Lucanus (genus)

Description:

The English name is derived from the large and distinctive mandibles found on the males of most species, which resemble the antlers of stags. Male stag beetles use their jaws to wrestle each other for favoured mating sites in a manner that parallels the way stags fight over females.

Notes:

From the size of those mandibles, I'm guessing this is a male! I am still unsure as to the exact species this one is.

Thanks for the ID Lars. Looking at the size of those mandibles, I'm guessing this is a male. I'm still on the hunt for the exact species.
