Suborder: Gammaridae
A small crustacean about 7 mm long with a laterally flattened body. Pic 1 shows the amphipod with its head under water . Just visible under water are the antennae and two white spots on either side could be the compound eyes. The tail segments are out of water as are the backward pointing last pairs of legs.
Spotted in a rock pool off the Western Port Bay.
They are small shrimp-like crustaceans found in plankton. also found in fresh water. They feed on algae and seaweed and some are carnivorous.
