Kidneywort

Anemone hepatica syn. Hepatica nobilis

Description:

One of the springflowers here in Sweden. They are clear blue when young and gets a bit pale when theyre older (like the ones in this pic). The leaves has got three lobes and are quite thick. The leaves on the pic does not belong to the kidneywort, see notes below.

Habitat:

It grows in woods and meadows in Scandinavia and some parts of Europe. In most places here in Sweden it is not allowed to pick them. (I don't know the english word for "fridlyst")

Notes:

The kidneyworts on this pic grows (en masse) in a meadow togehter with loads of Windflowers (anemone nemorosa). Therefor the leaves on the pic is not the one that belongs to the kidneywort. They belong to the windflower that shows in the background. We do not let the sheep graze in the meadows where the kidneywort grows, until late summer/early autumn.

Leuba, yes the meadows are really lovely when the Kidneywort and Windflowers covers the ground. I'll try to get some better photos this spring. A month or so, and theyre in full bloom :)
