Alligator Snapping Turtle

Macrochelys temminckii

Description:

An alligator snapping turtle at the Tulsa Aquarium. What a monster. These huge turtles are highly know for thier crushing bite force, fierce temperments, and speed. I can't count how many times I've been wading in shallow lakes or streams only to have this beautiful dragon burst from the waterline in an explosion of power. Alligator snappers can live for up to 200 years, and that's just incredible, that's longer than some tortoises.

Habitat:

Found in North America down into central and even the tips of South America.
