Stagmomantis carolina
I found this little guy under a 4x6 piece of wood, and he wanted to get away, but he thankfully stayed still enough for me to snap a picture or two. He's a green leaf color, and about an inch long, maybe a millimeter or two wide, if you just count the body. I couldn't tell if this was a male or female.
This little mantis was praying under a 4x6 piece of scrap wood, or next to it, when we found it. The soil there was a little damp, but not damp enough to feel on your fingers afterward.

Thank you ForestDragon, I changed the name as you suggested. It would make sense that this is a Carolina Mantis. And I'm not sure how many of these I will find, but thanks for the suggestion.
Hi brandonjc13, great find! This is a mantis nymph (not fully grown). Looking at the shape of the body and the color, I think this is a different species than Mantis religiosa. This looks more like a native species to me.
I am not sure which species this is. It may be a male Carolina Mantis (Stagmomantis carolina). Here is the BugGuide page to the different Mantid families for North America. Hope it helps! http://bugguide.net/node/view/342391/bgp...
