A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Aquila wahlbergi
Thank you Malcolm and Rachael, Ill be sure to use your advice on our next trip in Nov! Cant wait to spot an eagle!
Thanks everyone. Malcom is spot on - this bird was sitting in a dead tree right on the side of the road. We stopped our car right beside him to get this shot and he didn't seem to mind in the slightest!
I was using a Canon SX40HS (point and shoot with a 35x optical zoom - which was definitely not used on this shot!)
I can assure you that you sometimes can in Kruger Park where this was taken. The fact that you are not normally allowed to get out of your vehicle means that you can occasionally park very close to their resting spots and use the vehicle as a hide. Of course, having a large factor zoom lens and a high quality camera help also. I wrote an article on photographing birds for the newsletter/blog a while ago but it has not been published yet. The newsletter has been delayed but the blog is now up and running, link at bottom of page.
Stunning! I never managed to get so close to a bird of prey. You get really lucky. Great spot and thanks to sharing it!
Thanks. This bird was perched on a dead tree branch just on the side of the road when we were driving through Kruger NP. I'm not sure what it is - I can't find anything in the parks guide that mentions a bird this light in colour. Hopefully someone will know!
