Rhyothemis variegata
Rhyothemis variegata, known as the Common Picture Wing or Variegated Flutterer, is a species of dragonfly of the family Libellulidae, found in South Asia. They appear to have weak flight and can easily be mistaken for butterflies.
Nature's ballerina! In the 'http://www.ias.ac.in/initiat/sci_ed/lifescape/odonates-dragonflies.pdf' – reference (# 26) this dragonfly is beautifully described, with photos. The one I have is a male, the female has translucent wing tips...
thanks Arun... your projectnoah spotting confused me until I realized it was a female, and mine a male, and their wings are quite different.
Shan't question the expert again!! But I did learn a lot though... Thanks
Argybee, thanks for the great references. Yes I can see this is a male, the female's wings are quite different. More black, and translucent at the tips.

woops Argybee... that's a bit confusing... Oh right, I see now you deleted the earlier posts. I was just looking at my mail notifications
hmm, Arul. The wings look different. Mine doesn't have a transparent bit at the wing tip, and it seems more rounded. Also your spotting isn't doing a hand-stand!!!
thanks Atul... Is that common that they stand with their 'tail' straight up like that?
