Appreciate the clarification, asergio. I was looking at images of micrathena and quite a few of seemingly identical spiders and some were IDed as Gasteracantha.
@Emilie: yes, it is its abdomen. @Auntnance: no, they are different genus. Gasteracantha sp is found mostly in Asia, with only two species in Americas (USA and Chile). the genus Micrathena contains more than hundred species, most of them Neotropical woodland orb-weavers. (Wikipedia).
