Giant Centepede

Scolopendra subspinipes

Description:

This is a juvenile, only 2 cm (1 inch) long. A 14.5 inch long specimen was captured here on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Their venemous bite is very painful - see the large pinchers. The blue legs eventually turn orange. Scary critters!

Habitat:

We find a lot of these under rocks, especially in damp locations. We find some in the house too.

Notes:

According to at U of H, they can live for 10 years.
