Crazy looking ant?! Looks like he gives a painful sting. Any ideas on the ID would be great! :)

This is a female Velvet Ant. It is a kind of wasp, and yes she'll give you a painful sting if you pick her up. The males are winged (and don't sting). They are called Velvet Ants because many of them look like fuzzy ants.
