Pterois volitans
Lionfish are beautiful but deadly to their prey, and can inflict pain to humans if their feather-looking venomous spines are touched. They feed on small fish and crustaceans, and grow to a length of about 35cm. Also known as Common Lionfish.
Found singly almost anywhere on coral and rocky reefs, caves, drop-offs and sandy areas, at depths of 6 to 50m. During the day they stay in their homes and at night they go out to hunt.
This lionfish was hovering under a huge table coral on a steep slope, at a depth of about 50 feet.
