Common Evening Brown

Melanitis leda leda

Description:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Melanitis leda leda Linnaeus, 1758. This butterfly, whilst beautiful in appearance , can be a pest in the rice fields. On the day these pictures were taken, according to my notebook, there were a great many of them in a small one hectare field. The adult butterflies are not the problem, it is the larvae which feed on, and damage the crop.

Habitat:

All three Common Evening Browns were spotted in the same rice field, near our house.
