Sign In to followSorry to be so slow to update - my kids have been off school since late November and I haven't had much time for Project Noah. Hope to be spending more time here again soon...
That Flickr photo of M. hectica really looks exactly like mine. But M. fraterna, as pictured here: http://www.biol.uni.wroc.pl/cassidae/kat..., also is very like.
I also thought the spotting by manuelariasarias77 might be the same one...
Fantastic beetle!
Thank you for the suggestion TabrisTabarsi. It is important to consider range when identifying a species. The tortoise beetle you suggest is an Asian species and would not be found in Costa Rica.
Tiger beetles are ALWAYS running out of the photo frame in my experience :)
That's a handsome beetle, and big!
I returned to this location Nov 29, a week after this photo was taken. The egg mass looks the same. I had a good look around, but did not find any adult treehopper nearby.
What a beautiful bird!
Very nice!
So egg masses for different species look different - that is interesting to know. I hope I may be able to get back to this spot tomorrow or the next day. I will check on the eggs and look for an adult.
Thanks Sergio. I did not see a treehopper (there were a good many blue, metallic leaf beetles on the same plant). I hope I'll get a chance to go have another look ...
