Was it diving in the water? I have possibly seen these in Lake Erie and have been trying to figure out what they were.

It looks like a June Bug.
I did a little research and I'm pretty sure that it is Lucanus capreolus. He was just a little smaller than my thumb (I assume I have a normal sized thumb?). However, the Lucanus elaphus is also indigenous to Ohio according to a few websites.
That's what I though, but I talked to a friend who said they are much smaller where he is from, so I wasn't sure anymore. Thank you!!
