I understand this is not a crow, and I've seen Common Grackles before. But this is odd. The tail only comes to the tip of it's wings. Maybe regrowth of a tail? No rusty color on the back and wings. Immature bird?

The best way is the length of the bill. If the bill is almost as long as the width of the head then it is a Hairy. If it is shorter almost half than it is a Downy

Beaver spend most of their lives in creeks or rivers not much in ponds. The body is too short and small to be a Beaver.

Wood thrush is more rufous toward the head and Hermit more toward the wingtips and rump.
