it looks like a peony to me. Roses don't usually ever have ruffled edges on the petals like that. Also, the leaves in the background resemble peony.
This is most definitely a piece of a partridgeberry plant. They grow on barrens where it's moist. The berry here is green (not ripe), they turn red generally you don't pick them until after the first frost, sometime in September I'd say.

I'm amazed to see this bird sitting on your hand! I have some that come to the feeder and they hardly stay still long enough for me to get a photo! Well done.
yes I would say it is a blind-eyed sphinx, but I didn't get a look at the "eyes" though. I should have known that, I've seen them before. Thank you.
I really like their flying silhouette.
