As far as I know, he was an adolescent. His mom and dad had just hatched new babies, and they put him in there as s temporary home. My friend went back to the zoo about 2 weeks after this photo was taken and he was still in this small enclosure, attacking the glass and generally angry (rightfully so). I contacted Born Free, he has since been moved into a larger enclosure.
