Thanks chesterbperry and NatralList for steering me in the right direction. Rather than Solanum incanum, I'm thinking it might be Solanum Eleagnifolium http://www.sbs.utexas.edu/bio406d/images..., but after digging a little I see there are several Solanum species common in Texas. So I might need to wait until the spring to better identify the leaves and flowers.
Not sure about hardiness - it never really froze in Houston this winter (my first in this house). But that's the fun of acquiring a new yard with mystery plants...seeing how they do over the seasons (or lack of in Houston).
