The specimen I had stumbled upon clearly had an attached cap at the stipe, my mistake. Wish i would have known then, could have been a delightful while out on my hike.
Thanks for the info Trevor, I had a very reliable friend in the way of squirrel ID tell me otherwise. You were correct in assuming that Fox Squirrels are not native here. They are a much larger species (up to 2 ft long), the eastern greys are about half the size.
Over here in washington they are quite enjoyable, if the proper preparatory and cooking precautions are taken into practice. However, I haven't done so in years. Not my cup of tea :). Thanks for the input guys.
